# Nine Italian Beaches Make Europe's Top Fifty, and Getting Onto Them Is the Hard Part

Nine Italian beaches made the 2026 European ranking of The World's 50 Best Beaches. Seven are in Sardinia: Cala dei Gabbiani, La Pelosa, Tuerredda, Cala Coticcio, Is Arutas, Cala Brandinchi and Cala Luna. The list is completed by the Zingaro nature reserve on the north western tip of Sicily and Spiaggia Praia I Focu on the Calabrian coast. Last year Cala Goloritzé, on Sardinia's east coast, was named the best beach in the world.

The ranking is compiled from the votes of more than a thousand travel industry professionals, weighing swimming conditions, how crowded a beach gets and the likelihood of the perfect beach day.

The awkward part is what the list does to its own subjects. Heavy visitor pressure has pushed Sardinian councils into restrictions: daily caps, paid access, advance booking. The beaches that win are the ones most likely to require a permit to visit.

It is a small, precise example of a wider Italian problem. A place is celebrated, the celebration produces the crowd, and the crowd produces the rules that make the celebrated experience harder to have. The rankings do not create the pressure, but they do point it.
