# Italy's Defense Minister Says Cutting Ukraine Off From US Satellite Data Would Be an Absolute Mistake

> Guido Crosetto says reported US plans to restrict the satellite systems and intelligence Ukraine uses against Russian attacks would prolong the war rather than end it, while warning that Italy's own ability to keep approving weapons shipments will only get harder as elections approach.

Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has pushed back publicly against reports that the United States is weighing limits on the satellite systems and intelligence Ukraine relies on to track and respond to Russian attacks, calling any such restriction an absolute mistake. Crosetto said the idea makes absolutely no sense on its own terms, arguing it would end up prolonging the war rather than bringing it closer to peace.

His reasoning rests on a straightforward theory of how this war ends. Peace will come, he said, when Putin realizes that the situation has reached a dead end and he cannot advance any further, a version of deterrence that depends on Russia concluding further fighting is pointless rather than on Ukraine running out of the means to resist. Cutting the intelligence and satellite access that helps Ukraine see and counter Russian strikes, in Crosetto's framing, does the opposite, it signals weakness at exactly the moment that could encourage Moscow to keep pushing instead of looking for a way out.

Crosetto did not soften his language about what that continued pushing has looked like. He described Russian military operations over more than four years of cross border aggression as evil, pointing to tanks, the bombing of hospitals and schools, civilian deaths and strikes on power infrastructure as the record any decision about cutting support has to be weighed against.

On Italy's own role, Crosetto said Rome intends to keep its military support for Ukraine going, but he was candid about the domestic politics behind that pledge getting harder rather than easier. Securing parliamentary approval for future weapons shipments, he acknowledged, will become increasingly difficult the closer the country gets to the elections Italy must hold before the end of 2027. He added a separate accusation to that same point, that Russia has been running disinformation campaigns aimed at Italian politicians specifically to shift domestic attitudes toward Moscow before that vote.

What Crosetto's comments add up to is an Italian government making the case for staying the course on two fronts at once, pressing Washington not to pull back on the intelligence tools Ukraine depends on, while acknowledging that Rome's own capacity to keep sending weapons is running against a domestic political clock that an approaching election, and whatever influence Moscow is trying to exert on it, will only make tick faster.
