The suspicion had a name, colpo d'aria, the belief that a sudden blast of cold air could bring on anything from a stiff neck to real illness, a folk diagnosis serious enough to keep window units out of homes that could easily afford them. That resistance is breaking down fast. 56 percent of Italian households now have air conditioning, double the share in 2013, and installations are climbing by roughly 30 percent a year as summers keep setting records the old habits were not built to survive. The shift is large enough to show up in continental numbers, not just Italian ones. Italy alone now accounts for around a third of all air conditioning use across the European Union, a striking share for a country that spent so long treating the technology with suspicion while hotter neighbors installed it without a second thought. The reversal has less to do with changed minds than with changed summers, heatwaves intense and frequent enough that the old fear of a cold draft has largely lost the argument to the more immediate discomfort of a 40 degree afternoon. Cost was never the only obstacle, and in parts of the country it still is not. Heritage protection rules in historic town centers can block a visible wall unit outright if regulators decide it spoils the look of a protected building, and enforcement has real teeth, in Portofino homeowners have been fined tens of thousands of euros over air conditioning units installed without the right permissions. That leaves a country where the appetite for cooling is rising faster than almost anywhere else in Europe, while some of its most desirable addresses remain among the hardest places to actually install it. What the shift has not resolved is the tension between comfort and consumption that made Italians wary of air conditioning in the first place, just for a different reason than colpo d'aria. Widespread cooling draws heavily on a power grid that Italy, like most of southern Europe, is already straining to keep stable during the same heatwaves driving demand for it.
