Roger Federer is no longer a billionaire, on Forbes estimates, after shares in On Holding fell sharply on Tuesday morning following second quarter sales that came in below expectations. His net worth stood at 952,4 million dollars at half past twelve, down at least 52 million on the day, with the Swiss sportswear company's stock off roughly 19 percent at that point.

The quarter itself was not a disaster, which is part of what makes the move interesting. On reported net revenue of 850,4 million francs, about 1,04 billion dollars, according to the Wall Street Journal. That is growth of 13 percent. It was still short of the 878,4 million francs, around 1,08 billion dollars, that analysts had modelled, and the market treated the gap as the whole story.

Everything else in the release pointed the other way. Net profit came in at 105 million francs, or 129,4 million dollars, against a loss of 40,9 million francs, 50,4 million dollars, in the same period last year. Gross margin reached 65,4 percent, up from 61,5 percent a year earlier, and strong enough that the company raised its full year guidance for that measure to 65 percent.

Federer holds a stake of around 2,5 percent in the company, split between class A and class B shares, and it was that holding which first carried his wealth past a billion dollars last year. He is not far below the line now, and a recovery in the share price would put him back over it.

The tennis is the smaller part of the arithmetic. Federer retired in 2022 after a 24 year career that produced 20 Grand Slam titles and roughly 131 million dollars in prize money, a large sum that his post playing arrangements have comfortably outgrown. Sponsorship deals that are still running, with Uniqlo among others, and the minority position in On did the rest. He came into the company as a co owner in 2019, and On describes him as a close partner of its founders.
